FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

- How was Fort Gordon affected by the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Round (BRAC)?

- Fort Gordon was not affected by the 2005 BRAC.

- Will there be another BRAC?
  - Unlike previous BRAC Rounds, there was no language in the final BRAC Commission report mandating another BRAC. There is a strong belief among senior military and political leaders, however, that Defense budgets, technology advancements, and training requirements will require another look achieving additional savings and efficiencies through mission consolidation and further reduction of infrastructure costs. The closures and realignments resulting from the 2005 BRAC recommendations must be completed by 2011. Current projections are for another BRAC in the 2012-2015 timeframe, with data collection beginning in 2011.

- How much money was raised by the CSRA Alliance and what happened to it?

- The Alliance raised about $1.4M through government, business and private donations. Of that, about $600,000 remains in the Alliance accounts. Eighty percent of the monies spent, or about $600,000, was spent on consultant services not only to maintain full-time professional Alliance partners in Washington D.C., but to complete studies on economic impact, quality of life, economic diversification, and area strengths and weaknesses.

- How will the CSRA Alliance pay for its continued operation?

- The CSRA Alliance has a projected annual budget of $125,000 to fund one paid employee, marketing, travel, postage, and office administration. The Alliance has no consultants on retainer but has access to consultants as required for study updates or other specific requirements. The $125,000 will be raised as follows - $51,000 from local government, $25,000 from the CSRA account, and the balance from corporate donations.

- Doesn’t the new intelligence facility guarantee Ft Gordon will never close?

- Adding what will likely be a $500M+ facility to Ft Gordon certainly makes it unlikely Ft Gordon would ever completely close. It will not, however, prevent other missions from being moved to create efficiencies and savings. Consider the following:
  - Because of the realignment of Army communications assets, Fort Gordon is already projected to lose one signal battalion (about 475 soldiers) in 2008 when it relocates to Ft Hood, TX. Further mission realignments could result in additional losses (or gains). - Ft Gordon is one of the smaller Army installations, limiting the types of missions which could be added. Ft Benning is 3 times the size; Ft Stewart is 5 times the size.
  - After the 2005 BRAC closures and realignments are complete, Ft Gordon will be one of only 3 remaining training installations that house a single training school (Signal). All of the other schools except aviation (Ft Rucker) and military intelligence (Ft Huachuca) have been combined/consolidated into multi-discipline training centers. For example, the Armor school is moving from Ft Knox to be consolidated at Ft Benning. The Air Defense School is moving from Ft Bliss to be combined with the Artillery School at Ft Sill.

- What is the CSRA Alliance’s role today?
  - Serving as the central clearing house for initiatives involving Ft Gordon. - Pursuing quality of life improvements for servicemembers and their families to include spousal employment, education, housing, and recreation. - Advocating the needs of Fort Gordon with local, state and federal governments. - Maintaining awareness in the community of the value-added of being a military community.
