Alliance for Fort Gordon – CyberPatriot Camp

The Fort Gordon Cyber District – Alliance for Cyber Education (ACE) team was proud to fund and host two CyberPatriot summer camps again this year!

Air Force Association (AFA) CyberCamps are designed for high school and middle school students who are just getting into cybersecurity or who have cybersecurity knowledge and want to learn more. The camps are hosted by approved organizations and institutions that register with the CyberPatriot Program Office, including AFA Chapters, schools, universities, CAP squadrons, companies in industry, boys and girls clubs, etc.

The Alliance for Cyber Education (ACE) team is the current CyberPatriot Center of Excellence of the Year for the entire nation.

This was the first fully in-person camp the Alliance had hosted in two years. Instructors from NSA Georgia and units across Fort Gordon helped with this effort to locally grow cyber talent to fill the vast shortage of cyber workers this region needs. The Alliance for Fort Gordon also received a $25,000 dollar grant from AT&T to assist in the funding of this yearly effort. All of this helped to make it the largest CyberPatriot Summer Camp ever conducted in our region.

LTG Maria Barrett, the commander of Army Cyber Command, gave out completion certificates and awards to our campers the last day of camp.

The Alliance serves as the catalyst for the Fort Gordon Cyber District to become a nationally recognized cyber center of excellence.  At our core is a best-in-class relationship between the Alliance, Fort Gordon, and our region.

Our efforts center on ensuring the success of the critical missions at Fort Gordon knowing the increased importance of this military installation to our Nation’s security. The Alliance for Fort Gordon promotes coordinates and advocates for Augusta’s number one employer: Fort Gordon.

The Fort Gordon Cyber District represents a two-state, seven-county regional economic development and attraction initiative that supports both the defense and private sectors in technology, innovation, and growth. The two states are Georgia and South Carolina, and the seven counties are Burke, Richmond, Columbia, McDuffie, Lincoln, Edgefield, and Aiken.

The center of CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, which puts teams of high school and middle school students in the position of newly hired IT professionals tasked with managing the network of a small company. Through a series of online competition rounds, teams are given a set of virtual operating systems and are tasked with finding and fixing cybersecurity vulnerabilities while maintaining critical services.

The top teams in the nation earn all-expenses-paid trips to Maryland for the National Finals Competition where they can earn national recognition and scholarship money.

Held during the summer months, AFA CyberCamps emphasize fun, hands-on learning of cybersecurity principles that are relevant and applicable to everyday life. Though camps, students learn the importance of cyber safety and how to protect their personal devices and information from outside threats. Standard AFA CyberCamps teach beginner students the basics of cybersecurity, while Advanced AFA CyberCamps incorporate more complex concepts geared towards students who have previously participated in either a camp or the cyber defense competition.
