Motorists on Tobacco Road will see a new sign as they approach the Gate 5 entrance to Fort Gordon.

A sign that thanks and honors those are currently serving in the military and veterans has been added just past Deans Bridge Road. The sign was unveiled in a Dec. 14 ceremony.

District 9 Augusta Commissioner Francine Scott started the process to have the sign created and installed.

“The person who came asked me to do it was a District 3 constituent by the name was James Germany,” she explained. “He wrote to the commissioners and said that we needed to do something for our veterans and people who are still serving. I said, ‘Do you think a sign would be appropriate?’ And he said, ‘absolutely.’”

Among the speakers was Executive Director Tom Clark of the CSRA Alliance for Fort Gordon.
